Poor state of affairs at Pilikula Nisargdham

Pilikula Nisargadhama is a small in Mangalore. The name “Pilikula” is combination of a Tulu word “Pili and “Kola”. The word ‘Pili’ in Tulu means Tiger and ‘Kola’ means Pond. This zoo is situated Mudushedde village 3 kms from Vamanjur, which is near to Mangalore.

Pilikula is nice hang-out place in Mangalore. There is a amusement park. A beautiful Lake, and a zoo.
Everything is kept in good condition except for the zoo. There are many endangered animals like, Lion, Tiger, Panthers, Reptiles, Eagles, Langoors, Wild Cats, Bever.. and many more.

The good thing about the zoo is adoption. Each animal is adopted by NGO’s and Big Business Tycoons of the city.Another thing I liked is the information sign boards contains the name and other information about the animals.
You also find the name of the animal in local language i,e Tulu. Many of the localite don’t know the animal’s name in Tulu.

Everything is fine…. but i felt bad about condition of the zoo. The zoo is not maintained properly inspite of the adoption, the condition of the animals are bad. First and for most thing i observed is, no security man to look after the zoo. Only in the entrance we can see the security person. No one is appointed in the inside the zoo.. which is very very important. Once you enter into the zoo… You are free to do anything.

The cages in which the animals are kept are not so big. Some cages are so small that, the animals don’t have the option to turn itself. There is no drinking water kept in the cage. In some cage, like in reptiles section, there is overcrowd, Especially in Python’s cage there are about 20-25 Python. In one cage in I saw many coins of one rupee, two rupee, and so on. I didn’t understood why people put coins in that cage. and when I saw a Cobra in one corner… I understood the matter.

The plastic is a also a serious problem in the zoo. People bring the eatables in the plastic, and through the plastic and waste here and there. Although there is 79 dust bin kept with in the zoo. No body is interested in the disposing the waste in dust bin. I saw Black Buck is eating ‘Lays’. along with its wrapper.

To improve the situation in the zoo. Securities should be implemented with in the zoo. No eatable are allowed with in the zoo. and we the public also learn how to behave in the zoo. Some people are acting like ‘animals’ along with zoo animals.

Some points to remember while visiting a zoo

  • Don’t disturb zoo’s environment. Talk less and talk with the controlled pitch.
  • Please don’t give the eatable to the animals. You dont have a right to change the eating behaviour of the animals.
  • Please dispose the waste in the waste bin only.
  • Don’t irritate the animals by disturbing them by stones, sticks… etc.
  • Lastly please don’t use mobiles as far as possible.
